Tiger Cub Happenings
Winter Camping 2015
Winter camping at Camp Sam Wood started off cold at around 10 degrees! Upon arriving at camp we found we had to hike about 3/4's of a mile through at least a foot of snow just to get to our cabin! The boys did a great job of toughing it and hiked the whole way. Thankfully Mr. Littleton was able to get his truck through the snow about halfway to the cabin so he was able to help the parent lug all our stuff up or we may not have been able to make it! After checking out our cabin and picking out bunks the Boy Scouts joined us and took the Cubs on a hike and to a great sledding hill they had made with lots of hard work. The boys really enjoyed the sledding and a snowball fight. Afterwards the Boy Scouts invited us to their lodge (which had heat and electricity!) for together before hiking back to our cabin (which didn't have electricity and had a fire place for heat) Mr. Dietrich and Mr. Decker made a very tasty peach cobbler in a Dutch Oven for dessert. We all enjoyed it immensely! After dessert the boys all learned how to make fire starters out of dryer lint and toilet paper rolls. The boys enjoyed the rest of the evening talking, telling stories and hanging out in the cabin. Most of the cubs fell asleep rather well although we had a few night owls who stayed up with the parents as we talked and told stories.
Sunday started off pretty early with cooking breakfast over the fire outside. The boys took turns trying to light a fire with a flint and we had a few successes! Breakfast was delicious with Mr. Decker and Mr. Rubinrott making Bacon, Sausage, French Toast, and Mr. Rubinrott’s famous Egg Sandwiches! The boys enjoyed some more sledding while we broke down camp. With quite a few trips we were packed up and ready to head for home.
All of the cubs did a great job helping out this weekend and we all very well behaved. A big thank you to all the parents who made this weekend possible and came out to spend time with the boys in the freezing cold in a cabin in the middle of nowhere! Seeing all the boys having fun together and making memories was definitely worth it! Please add comments about what you and your cub enjoyed doing or things you want to remember about what a great weekend we all had!
January Den Meeting
Our January Pack meeting was filled with a lot of excitement for our cubs! They started off with a very well executed presentation of the colors to the pack. All the boys did a great job! After they preformed a funny skit called The Cub scout Emergency Broadcast. Everyone enjoyed seeing the skit and the boys got a great round of applause (which they may not have heard as they were running the halls of the school a bit more than planned!) Our guest speaker Chris gave the boys a first hand glimpse of what it way like to hike the entire Appalachian Trail. He showed the boys what he carried in his pack and what it was like to spend 8 months hiking! The boys had a lot of interesting questions but were a little disappointed he did not see Sasquatch. We ended the evening by enjoying a feast of wonderful cakes. You could really tell the boys and their parents worked really hard on their creations and were each so proud of them. Way to go Tigers!
January Den Meeting
Our cubs worked on their 3rd achievement tonight, Keeping Myself Healthy and Safe. The boys made Food Guide Pyramid's and talked about eating healthy foods. They enjoyed a healthy snack to go along with what they learned. They also took turns practicing presenting the colors for the pack meeting. After explaining to the boys that presenting the colors are a way to show respect to our country and state they had a few questions. We were lucky to have a veteran who was able give our cubs some insight on the military. A special thank you to Brandon Littleton for answering all the boys questions they had about the different branches of the military and what they do.
December Pack Meeting
The cubs got a great surprise at the pack meeting this month. Santa took time out of his busy schedule to stop by to see all the cubs and wish them Merry Christmas. Santa was very generous and gave the boys an early Christmas present…..Pinewood Derby Cars!!! Our cubs were very thankful and excited to get their cars. The boys also earned their patches for popcorn sales and received their prizes. Way to go boys!! We finished off the night with a fun game and got to decorate and eat delicious
cookies
Zoo Workshop
Even though it was a cold rainy day our Cubs had a great time at the Seneca Park Zoo at the Cub Scout Workshop. We got to meet some really cool animals and learned some really cool facts about them. The boys really liked being able to pet the chinchilla Gina from Argentina, although quite a few wished they could have pet Elvis the Boa Constrictor (not the same could be said for the parents!). The tour we took was very informative and the boys got to see Sea Lions, a baby Orangutan, an endangered Rhino, Bald Eagles, Wolves, and of course the Tiger! We finished up with learning about reusing and recycling while we made nifty bird feeders out of pine cones for the boys to take home. At the end of the workshop Miss Katie, one of the activity directors, told us that our Den was the BEST behaved Scouts she has ever worked with. Way to go Tigers!!
Camp Good Days Kazoo Fest
We had a great turn out for helping out Camp Good Days on Friday. The cubs all put in a lot of hard work selling kazoos and candy cane pens to help raise money for kids who have been affected by cancer. The boys had a great time with lots of laughter and raised over $585! Thank you to all the cubs and parents who spent their Friday night at a crowed noisy mall to support a good cause.
December Den Meeting
For our December Den Meeting the cubs worked on learning about their community and where they live. Sheila Wiley made an amazing map of our town and the cubs took turns locating were they lived and other important places in our town. Not surprisingly they all knew where Pizza Land was!
Battleship Sleepover Nov 15th-16th
Wow! What an awesome opportunity we got to share with our cubs and the pack! There we so many exciting things we did and saw it was hard to choose a favorite part. The cubs were so exhausted from all the excitement the slept like logs. (Too bad the parents can't say the same!)
